Language
The main language in Beijing is Mandarin Chinese. This language originated in Beijing and is now the official language of China.
Ethnic Groups
All 56 ethnic groups of China are present in this city, with 96.5% of the population being Han Chinese. The rest of the population is made up of the other 55 ethnic minorities, the biggest being Manchu, Hui and Mongol.
Religion
There are many religions in this huge city. In theory, people are free to practice any religion in the city. This is not always the case and there is some tension between different groups.

Migration
People are attracted to Beijing because of job opportunities and the better living conditions compared to rural areas. There are 7 million migrants in Beijing, making up 35% of the population. This number is continually growing and migrant workers contribute much to the city’s economy. However, social inequalities exist between them and the rest of the population.
